Ernst Schade

Ernst Schade (1949, The Netherlands) was trained in tropical agriculture before fully dedicating himself to photography. He spent 16 years in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique where he worked on rural development programs for various governmental and non-governmental organisations. From 1989 to 1995, he was Resident Representative for the Norwegian-led branch of the international organisation Save the Children in Mozambique.
A self-taught photographer, Ernst began publishing his work in 1984. He is represented by the international photo agencies Panos Pictures (UK) and De Beeldunie (The Netherlands), and his work has been published globally. Since 1995, photography is his main profession. Ernst is based in Lisbon, Portugal

In addition to photography, Ernst has contributed to several publications. He co-authored the book “Dambudzo Marechera 1952-1987” with Flora Veit-Wild and contributed to other books on this Zimbabwean writer. Ernst also wrote about child rights and Zimbabwean sculpture, particularly focusing on the Tengenenge Sculptors Community. His work has been included in the American National Archives, the Arquivo Histórico de Moçambique (National Archives of Mozambique) and the International Institute of Social History (IISG) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
